Q&A: Taylor Hanson Talks New Album, Old Songs and Tie-In Products
By Lily Rothman June 14th, 2013
Yes, that’s as in Hanson, the Oklahoma-bred trio that’s now in its third decade of pop-music production. Middle brother Taylor, 30, is still making music with Isaac and Zac: their latest album is out June 18, and that’s not all they’ve got going on. He recently spoke with TIME.
Do you have any plans for your other band, Tinted Windows?
We’ll probably be doing some writing this summer. The short answer is yes, there are some Tinted Windows plans. It’s a side project for everybody, so it fits in in between.

'93-'13: Tinted Windows, Messing With My Head
20 May 2013 by Nathan Jolly
James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and Taylor Hanson from your bedroom wall team up with Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos and pump out one dazzling set of power pop tunes before disappearing. It's the type of side project that could quickly be forgotten in today's rush of releases; indeed numerous fans of Hanson and/or Smashing Pumpkins still have no idea such a record exists. Hopefully, this song's undeniable excellence will see their 2009 self-titled record slowly surface and begin to take hold. It took Big Star years to gain recognition, and Messing With My Head certainly doesn't live streets away from Big Star's more bombastic cuts.
For those with overriding high school hangups about having a crush on the blonde chick from Hanson, this song packs much more of a punch than Hanson's R'n'B-leaning material, with no ivory tickled during the making of the record whatsoever.
Taylor Hanson still seemed excited about the project years later...

Bun E.: "we got offered some dates for this Fall"
Legendary Rock Interviews

Cheap Trick’s Bun E. Carlos is alive and well and talks early Trick, touring and more
LRI: What’s the story with the band Tinted Windows? Is that project still active?
Bun E: Yeah, Adam from of Fountains of Wayne, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, umm… James Iha of The Pumpkins. Yeah that’s still together actually and we got offered some dates for this Fall but they conflicted with Fountains of Wayne dates. That band is still a functioning business; we still have an accountant and a bank account. I just saw a James Iha interview in the Illinois Entertainer where he was saying that (we) Tinted Windows were thinking about doing a second album and I’m thinking to myself, “Oh, that’s news to me” (laughs)!
Radio 104.5 interview James Iha October 25, 2012
DJ: One of the other ones... Tinted Windows. I know that's other full on.. an other super group happening there. Is the door shut on that one? Come back to it when we can?
James: No, it's more out everyone’s busyness and schedules that we haven't gotten together and done an other record. Everybody is still into it. Adam, Taylor, Bun E. and myself, but just we haven't got around to writing an other record. I mean everybody has their kind of main thing. Taylor has Hanson obviously and Adam has Fountains Of Wayne and a million other things. I'm working on my solo thing and producing, so it's more just a matter of like, I don't know... somebody writing some songs and then I think we will do Tinted Windows too if we do that.

You almost formed a supergroup of sorts with The Virgins, featuring Evan Dando, that never actually came to fruition. Ryan Adams, and Melissa Auf Der Maur.
But you did form another supergroup in Tinted Windows [Bun E. Carlos, Taylor Hanson, Adam Schleshinger].
Why did the Virgins never happen, and how did Tinted Windows come about?
Tinted Windows happened because my friend Adam Schleshinger of Fountains of Wayne, and many other bands, was like, “Do you wanna make a band with Taylor Hanson singing?” And I said, “Yeah, that’d be awesome.” He started writing some songs. He’s been friendly with Taylor for a while, and he emailed him, and it just sort of happened.
Was it always power pop from the beginning, or was that Bun E. Carlos’s influence?
Yeah, we never had a prog rock phase or a neo soul phase or anything like that. It was always power pop, pop rock, whatever you want to call it.
Will there ever be a Tinted Windows II?
We’re talking about it. I hope so.
